Beaches

Elafonisi

One of the most beautiful beaches in Greece and Europe.

A true wonder of nature and recognized as one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece and Europe, Elafonissi is one of the top destinations for visitors to Chania. Its crystal clear turquoise waters and red and white sand never ceases to awe visitors. The area is a peninsula split down the middle and gives the impression of being an island. It is amazing for children because of its shallow waters, but some parts are also ideal for swimming and diving. It is also surrounded by many exotic species of trees and flowers and the area is classified as “Natura”, which means it is protected by the state.

Lagoon of Balos

White sandy beaches and crystal clear shallow waters

Known as “the most photographed beach in Crete”, Balos is located on a small peninsula on the western side of the island. The beach is accessible by boat and car. Although the first option is a slightly easier way to reach the beach, going by car and then on foot allows the visitor to admire the scenery from above and see Balos in the most picturesque way. The white sandy beaches and clear blue waters are stunning and the area is a haven for sea turtles and some rare species of seals. The crystal clear shallow waters are the perfect place for romantic walks, while the deeper areas are ideal for diving.

Falassarna

Tropical paradise with turquoise waters and a beautiful sunset

This beach is located on the western side of the cape of Gramvousa and has been voted in the past as the best beach in Crete and one of the ten best beaches in Europe. It stretches over a large area and is divided into five parts, with the most popular of these being known as “Megali Paralia”. The beauty of Falassarna lies in its fine white sand. This gives the water a turquoise appearance that makes the visitor feel like they are swimming in a tropical paradise. It is a great place to enjoy the sunset.

Stefanos Beach (Seitan Ports)

Isolated and ideal for swimming and diving

A “dark” beach, but known as a hidden gem among the locals, located on the Akrotiri peninsula, near the village of Chordaki. It is a narrow cove, ideal for swimming, diving and snorkelling. Despite the fact that the beach is difficult to reach (via a rough path), it is well worth a visit. It is shielded from the waves due to its geographical location, but it is an excellent choice due to the fact that it is isolated.

Paleochora

Beaches with crystal clear waters ideal for getaways

The beaches on and around this fishing village are a place that all visitors to Chania should visit. Lined with pebbles instead of sand, a phenomenon typical of the beaches of the southern coast of the island, Paleochora is sure to be unforgettable. The waters are crystal clear and slightly colder compared to the north coast of the island. Blue royal colours contrast with the mountainous, wild landscape. Paleochora is the ideal getaway, as it includes many choices of fish taverns and cafes.

Sfakia

Traditional area with many beaches

Sfakia is one of the most traditional areas of Crete and a place that retains its original character and aura. The area of Sfakia includes many wonderful beaches, such as Ilinga, Glyka Nera, Fragokastello and Loutro. It is located in a rocky area in the southern part of the island with a legacy of many kilometres of unspoilt coastline, which in many places is only accessible by boat.

Fragokastello

Swimming on the beach with a view of the castle

Frangokastello is notable for its 14th century castle which is just a few metres from the beach and visible as you swim!
